Yeah, I'm still slowly doing these. [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl asked for ""Do not go gentle into that good night."

I’m really being quite lazy about LJ and such, but I have started working on some of the prompts I got (if anyone else wants to play, feel free--although see disclaimers ;) ).

Some preliminary notes:

· A number of you seem to really want to force me to write Resurrection, a/k/a teh crack. (Birthday cake? Pie? Disney?) But I rarely do what I’m told.

· Food seems to be a theme. Or least I think it is.

· I don’t think any of these is going to be 100 words. Maybe.

In other random news, I suspended my no sugar rule long enough to try wild cherry m&ms. They were not quite as awesome as I was hoping, but not bad. If I can just get my hands on the mint crisp ones, my life might just be complete.

Prompts?

I'm being horribly procrastinatory on all things. I also haven't written a word of fic in at least a month. So, to help get the creative juices flowing (or at least give me something else to procrastinate about), anyone want to give me drabble prompts?

Because I fancy myself in control:

(1) No scenarios, plots, questions, etc--words, quotes, images, phrases would be great;
(2) I get to pick the 'verse, although you can try making a suggestion if you have a preference (KA (movie, crack or myth) or greek mythology (yes, I'm supposedly still writing that));
(3) I think I'm going to do the 100 word limit thing, although I might not; and
(4) I am in the mood to procrastinate, and I'm slow, so no promises.

(Oh, look, shiny, a list!)

If anyone still wants to play, prompt away.

[livejournal.com profile] enemyfrigate wrote what I'll call an AU AU for the Resurrection series for the crackiversary! It's narrated by Lancelot's sister after Lancelot has been conscripted, and, while it makes some interesting use of my ideas and themes from the series, I think it stands really well on its own (although why would you be reading this post if you're not reading teh crack?--although I suppose all things are possible).

Anyway, I think you should all go read it!

[livejournal.com profile] darklyscarlett sent me this link to a a story from The Sun, published on the crackiversary.

Too funny! (And Tor nearly wet himself laughing when he saw it. Percival tried to shrug it off, but he did pick a fight with Tor afterward. Unlike their usual confrontations, where no clear winner emerges, Percy won this one, since Tor couldn't defend himself--he was still laughing too hard.)

(Posting tonight after midnight, since I'm not sure what my day tomorrow will be like. )

It’s two years today since I posted the first story in teh crack saga Resurrection. When I wrote the first little snippet, I never intended to write a sequel, much less a series, but here we are 131,500 words and 15 (only counting the main body) fics later.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] livigiano, who drew this lovely picture of our anti-hero for the occasion. Thanks again Livi!

Also [livejournal.com profile] lessy37, who always makes such wonderful icons, made me some updated icons for the new year (never thought I'd still be writing this in 2008 *_*), one of which adorns this post. Thanks Lessy!

For my part, you'll find a crackiversary fic here, and you'll find my "answers" to the questions I was asked about the series here.

If anyone has anything they want to share, feel free to post in the comments to this post.

Happy crackiversary to one and all. :D

Happy Crackiversary! In honor of the occasion, we go back to the beginning and pure, unadulterated (I hope), old school crack. ;) I was going to call this a ficlet, until I realized that it was longer than the first two stories of the series, and nearly as long as the third. Ah, the good old days.

In the spirit of the Crackiversary, I opened the floor to any questions you guys wanted to ask. I’m really honored that some of you took the time to come up with questions. But it turns out that this was not one of my better ideas, since, of course, now I’m not really going to answer most of the questions. If the U.S. primaries haven’t made you utterly sick of the whole dodging the question thing, here are the questions and my often not so answering answers. Enjoy. ;)

Although I’ve been trying to keep my mood up, I’ve been not so pleased lately. It’s the usual combination of I hate my job, what am I doing with my life, the world is melting, the world is spiraling further into chaos, my country is no longer recognizable to me, all my painfully-earned savings are shrinking, people suck and so on.

My reaction to Heath Ledger’s death is case in point of my grumpiness. It was shocking, he was young and had a promising career, I feel bad for his family, but . . . why is this so front in center in the news and in people’s minds? I realize this is the unfortunate way that the new news cycle has come to work and that there are much, much less worthy things that the press has focused on (hi Brittany!), but I’m actually just annoyed at this point. Can we bother with the actual news just for the sake of novelty? It’s not like there are a shortage of conflict-oriented stories out there for the media to cover.

I’ve pretty much not talked about current events or politics here in ages—and I’m not going to go into any kind of long rant—but I’m feeling compelled to point to a few things today, just because. If one follows the non-celebrity oriented news, no real surprises, I should think. Some might say don’t read if you don’t want to be depressed, but, despite my current state of mind, I’ve never bought that idea.

A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials made over 900 false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The U.S. Supreme Court refuses to hear Enron investors appeal.

The West should strike first, and with nuclear weapons, if necessary. So says a new, 150-page "manifesto" penned by five retired senior NATO officers and military strategists and distributed over the last 10 days to Pentagon officials and NATO Secretary General.

If you were watching the news, you may have heard about the confrontation between the U.S. navy and Iranian speedboats in the strait of Hormuz. What didn’t get as much coverage (no surprise) is that the incident was basically manufactured out of a routine event. (Also see Jon Stewart poking fun at this--I have to include this clip because of the huge love for Aasif Mandvi’s “I’m from Tampa, Jon.”) Yeah, since the war mongering has been going so poorly, CNN felt it necessary to step in and do all that it could do for its country.

“A new mortality report from the International Rescue Committee says that as many as 5.4 million people have died from war-related causes in the Congo since 1998. A staggering 45,000 people continue to die each month, both from the conflict and the related humanitarian crisis. Amidst the deadliest conflict since World War II, hundreds of international corporations have reaped enormous profits from extracting and processing Congolese minerals.” See here.

Congress fails to override SCHIP veto. And some Republicans call this attempt to extend the healthcare of uninsured children a political stunt.

This summer brings unnerving shrinking of polar ice. “Astonished by the summer’s changes, scientists are studying the forces that exposed one million square miles of open water — six Californias — beyond the average since satellites started measurements in 1979.”

Surviving a CIA black site. Mohamed Farag Ahmad Bashmilah spent over two and half years imprisoned before being released without any charges being filed against him. He describes: “They wanted me to confess to having some connections to some individuals of al-Qaida. They tried several times to get me to confess, and every time I said no, I would get either a kick, a slap or a curse. Then they said that if I did not confess, they will bring my wife and rape her in front of me. And out of fear for what would happen to my family, I screamed and I fainted. After I came to, I told them that ‘please, don’t do anything to my family. I would cooperate with you in any way you want.’”

Prison break in Gaza “But for Palestinians, life has grown more unbearable since Bush decided to get "engaged". Since Annapolis, the death toll of Palestinians killed by Israelis has soared 100%. The ratio of Palestinians to Israelis killed last year was the most unbalanced ever, at 40:1, up from 30:1 in 2006 and 4:1 from 2000-2005. The total death toll for 2007 stands at 322 Palestinians and eight Israelis. Of the eight, five were soldiers who died while carrying out military operations inside the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The pretext for these endless killings is the Qassam rockets. But the truth is that the daily incursions, assassinations, and embargo, have proceeded without fail before and after the rockets. The excuses change all the time, but the reality of occupation remains the same.”

I could go on, and on. But I’ll stop here since I'm now slightly more angry than depressed. So on a lighter note, just for fun:

Bill Clinton: Screw it, I’m running for President. “While the announcement has come as a surprise to many, Beltway observers said it was not completely unexpected, citing footage from a recent Democratic debate that showed Clinton fidgeting in his seat, gripping the arms of his chair, and repeatedly glancing at all the television cameras while rapidly tapping his right foot. Analysts also noted one debate in which Clinton mouthed responses to all the moderator's questions while making hand gestures to himself.”

I'm no doubt suffering delusions of grandeur (I provide hours of amusement for myself that way), but if anyone else wants to ask questions for the crackiversary, I'll extend the deadline for one more day, until the end of the weekend. If you have anything you'd like to ask, go here.

Also, o all knowing friends' list, does anyone want to suggest a favorite men's shoe that is ridiculously expensive yet tasteful? Something to wear with a three thousand dollar suit.
amari_z: (social event Arthur)
Just a reminder, in case anyone else wants to play: if you have questions you want to ask go here. (If you don't know what I'm talking about and are curious, go there as well).

Since I'm pretty busy right now, I'm going to have to have to impose a deadline for questions. So, if you want to ask something, please do so by Saturday, January 19.

Nine more days until the crackiversary!

Perhaps a real updatey type post later, but now I’m waiting for something at work, and so have decided this is a lull and I will update my Big List of Shame. It’s a little sad to delete all the books I've read, since they show progress amidst the madness (I had reached equilibrium between the read and unread tally at the end of the year). But a new year seems like a good time to clean it up, and I've gone on a mini buying spree recently--and I'm eyeing more. (Stop that!) I don’t think I’ve even added everything I purchased. ^^; Perhaps the sheer numbers here will have some impact on me, considering I have a few more books on this list than the total number of books I remember reading last year.

amari_z: (tehcrack)
So as I threatened, noted, I was thinking about what to do for teh crack's second anniversary on January 25 (the day, two (!) years ago, that I posted Resurrection), and, as usual, I have come up with no brilliant, original ideas. So, instead we'll be unoriginal and call it tradition.

If anyone has any desire to pay homage to Lancelot play in the crackverse, January 25 is the day: fic, icons, drawings, uplighting highlighting tips for Galahad, what you think should/will happen next (this I'd love to hear ;) ), songs for Bors to sing--it's all good. Come on, you know you want to (and you don't want to make Lancelot sulk, do you?).

After some hesitation, I'm going to throw the comments to this post open for prompts or questions. Ever wanted to know how Arthur crashed the car or witness Lancelot's first encounter with an alarm clock? Ask away, although I won't answer questions where the answer is a potential spoiler or requires me to write an epic. With work the way it is, I can't promise I'll be answer everyone on the 25th, but I'll certainly give it try.

Eighteen days to the crackiversary!
amari_z: (worst thing about new books)
This is probably of little interest to anyone but me and my ongoing futile attempts to keep myself from buying a gazillion books, but here's a list of books I read this year. It is both somewhat impressive to me given my schedule, and yet also depressing given my grandiose appetites.

It's what I can figure out (did I really read nothing in January and February?), including some of the less than literary stuff that I don't usually bother to include in my shame lists (and most of which I've probably forgotten anyway). Except for some at the end, I think I've mentioned most of these somewhere in my journal, but if anyone wants commentary or recs, feel free to ask.

ExpandWhat I read in 2007 )
amari_z: (Castus 2007)
I did this last year, and so it seems to be a tradition, or something. I'm actually a little sad to see how little I wrote, billions of pages of teh crack aside. All King Arthur fic. I really need to get back into the Greek mythology. Maybe I should reread the Iliad again . . . .

The first line of the first fic posted each month this year:

January. Words Unspoken:
Arthur was nearly asleep when he felt Lancelot lay down beside him.

February. Half Awake:
Lancelot woke with a start, unsure of where he was.

March. Untitled Resurrection ficlet:
Lancelot was watching Arthur and not bothering to hide it.

April. First Impressions (drabble):
They’d had so many commanders that Bors joked it was pointless to learn names: "Call’em sir to their faces; bastards to their backs."

May. In Twilight’s Kingdom:
Lancelot stood on a wide plain, listening to the wind moving through the swaying sea of grass.

June. None, except some Resurrection question memes. The first one of the month began:
The first time Lancelot drank coffee, everyone was very sorry (except him).

July. Prelude:
Arthur sat slumped in a dark corner of the tavern, as indifferent to the soldiers carousing around him as they were to him.

August. The Coming of Spring (drabble):
They watch for them.

September. None

October. None

November. None

December. Rumors of War (see, I was working on something!):
The trip back from Eboracum passed as a gray haze, punctured by occasional small flares of dread at the sight of each landmark signaling their progress toward Badon Hill.

Not quite as exciting as I would have liked, but it’s certainly too late to change it. May next year bring more time and inspiration for fun with words.
