It's been a long time, and see you later

I'm not sure if any one of you is still using your livejournal, but, in light of the recent changes, I'm going to be deleting this account soon. I'm moving to dreamwidth, where I have an account under the same user name. The account's empty at the moment, but I'm in the process of transferring my old entries there. I had to accept the new user agreement to do so, which I don't actually agree with, so I'll be de deleting as soon as I'm sure everything has been moved over.

I haven't updated this journal in years, but I'm sad to be losing it. I have a lot of good memories associated with this place. I never really meant to abandon the account, but time got away from me, and then it seemed like no one was active anymore. If any of you have dreamwidth accounts, please feel free to friend me there, or leave your account name in the comments and I'll look for you. Having made my first entry in 7 years (!!), it's not impossible that I've created some momentum. :)

Regardless, wherever you are or end up, I wish you well.

On Resurrecting Resurrection

Well, as a few of you have noticed, there's been no fic from me in over a year. I didn’t have the time, and then didn't seem to have the inclination. I literally have not written anything since March 2009. (For fun that is. I probably wrote over a thousand pages for work last year, which may have been a lot of the problem.)

I am thinking about the fic a little again. To find out if I can re-gleeify myself for it, I've gone back and started rereading this week (and man, is it long—I’m barely a quarter way through). But I guess the question I’m wondering about is, is it worth the effort? I'm a little OCD about finishing tasks I've set myself, but that's not a good enough reason to devote as much time and effort as this fic requires. Are you guys seriously still interested in this thing? I'm not looking for head patting here (or maybe I am a little), but genuine input. Fandoms are a fickle thing and people move on. As much as the act of writing has to be for my own enjoyment, I'd be lying if I said it didn't matter if anyone was interested and reading.

(Keep in mind, though, even if I do get myself to reengage on the fic, it will be awhile before I produce anything, given the novella length of the chapters and the ever-exciting vagrancies of work. And I'd have a lot of reading to do first.)

Big List of Shame 2010

Since I just posted my summary of 2009 in books, we'll pretend it's still the beginning of the year. So here is my annual Big List of Shame for 2010. The LoS is a list of the unread books I have cluttering up my apartment, and is supposed to shame me into curbing my book buying addiction. It's hard to say how successful it is (it's kind of like trying to hold back the tide with a colander), but it probably does make me at least think twice before buying yet another book. This is already out of date, but let's ignore that. As of January (how did it get to be March, anyway?), I had 81 unread books. That sounds pretty bad, but it's actually not so very horrible for me. It's only about 20 more than I had at the start of 2008.

2009 in Books

Yes, I know it’s March! After being oppressed at work for the last month, here is the much belated 2009 in books.

Does this thing even still work?

It looks like it has been nearly a year since I’ve posted. Who knew? Back in March of last year, I got slammed with a new case and pretty much didn’t sleep until September. (I’m exaggerating. A little.) After that, I think I spent the rest of the year as a zombie, shambling about in a daze. I haven’t been around LJ at all, but it did recently occur to me that the crackiversary came and went without fanfare, and I began to wonder if I was in the mood to write again. (After writing over 700 pages for work in the space of a few months, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be in the mood to write again.) More about the fate of Resurrection next time, but for now I figured I’d just post to break the ice and clear the dust. It helps that today’s a snow day and I’m hanging out in Starbucks with my computer for the first time since . . . finishing up with Ties that Break? I think so.

Hope you’ve all had a good year. I think I’ve a couple comments that I never responded to, which I will check shortly. Sorry about that.

Also, coming soon, a belated report on 2009 in books! It was less than a stellar year for reading, but you know I’ve got to keep track of these things in the quest to stem the tide of books that somehow just keeps flowing into my apartment.

The more you ignore me

I've been completely subsumed in work for a while now, and maybe for a while longer (the kind of I-go-home-only-to-shower-and-am-so-sleep-deprieved-that-I-forget-how-to-do-things-like-get-the-elevator-to-come subsumed). I think I might owe a couple people replies, but I won't be able to get to it until this subsides.

Filed papers at 2 am today and I'm now waiting for flight to Atlanta, which is delayed. Tomorrow will be make or break day for my schedule. Many stories to tell later, if I get around to it.

Anyway, it was a good thing I got to finish the crack up when I did, because this would have completely derailed me. (And if you haven't read it, go read it! The knights are getting restless and I don't have a moment to spare for them.)

King Arthur fic: Ties that Break (Resurrection AU), Part 3

Part one of the chapter is here, with headers and series links.

Part two is here.

This is the final part of the chapter. This chapter has been a long time coming in more ways than one. It's a point in the story that I've been planning toward for literally years. I'd love to hear what you think!

King Arthur Fic: Ties that Break (Resurrection Au)

Title: Ties that Break

Warnings: Slash and some violence

Series: Part of the AU that began with Resurrection. The series (with links) is Resurrection, Tools of the Trade, Slave to Fashion, Trouble in the Making, Out on the Town, Weapons of Choice, Myths, Legends and Lies, Lessons in Deportment, Ties to Bind, The Shopping Expedition, Dangerous Games, Rude Awakenings, All Things Mortal, In Twilight's Kingdom, Rumors of War and this one. To make sense, the stories should be read in order.

Notes: Whew! At last. Thanks to all of you who have been waiting so patiently, and especially to [livejournal.com profile] darklyscarlett and [livejournal.com profile] sasha_b for pre-reading.

Crack update

So, I think the chapter should be up next week. (I told you I don't have much patience for editing.)

As I said before, it's pretty long, so I'm going to do something slightly different from the usual, and post it in three parts over the course of a few days. This is mainly so I can force myself to proofread it. I'm less likely to wander off and decide I'd rather be doing something else if I proof it in chunks over a schedule of a few days. (It may also encourage you guys to read more slowly, because who knows when you'll next be getting a chapter? Of course, if you'd rather, you can wait to read it until the whole thing is posted.)

The division into parts is going to be strictly based on length, not on story structure. I'll try to post one section a day once I start, but I can't absolutely promise I'll stick to that schedule.

So, nearly there!

Joe Biden, Fanboy

I'm probably the last person on the planet to have seen this, but in case I'm not, according to Marvel, Joe Biden is a Knight Rider fanboy! Hee!

Screen shot from the web comic (Obama meets Spiderman!) below the cut, the whole of which can be found here (after the President's Day edition).

Imposter!Obama has just left on his way to the inauguration! Will the Real!Obama and Biden be able to stop him in time!???

Crack news

First draft of new chapter of Resurrection is done. It needs major arse kicking editing, and who knows if I'll decide to add another scene or two, but the draft is done. Who'd have believed it would ever happen? It's only taken *mumble*.

I'm in my usual state of wavering between glee and disgust at it. Right now, it's longer than any other chapter except Rumors, which was a monster, and it's not that much shorter, at 25,000 words. Editing is going to make me cry.

No promises on when I'll be ready to post, but my tolerance for editing is not endless. So, if you don't remember what's been going on, it might be time to do some recollection refreshing. This chapter is heavy on plot (no wonder it took me so long to get it out), and, as usual, the chapter just picks up where the last one left off.

As much as I want to pummel the draft for being sucky, I'm kind of excited. This chapter has a lot of stuff in it that I've been working toward since when I first decided to make this into a series. Now that the end (of the chapter, not the series), is finally in sight, I'm anxious to see what you guys think. But first I have to finish it.

Crackiversary Party Game Winner!

Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] fisher_queen for winning the Crackiversary Party Game!!! She got an incredibly cracktastic score of 20.5 out of a possible 23 points. Not shabby at all--it's better than I would have done! (Tor, btw, only got 11 right, even though he ran around the house accosting people and demanding to know what a "Barlow" was. He eventually, perhaps inevitably, settled on "food" as his answer. Kay, who was quizmaster here, had to give a moments thought before deciding that was worth partial credit.)

[livejournal.com profile] fisher_queen, I'll be contacting you about your prizes, so think about what name and characteristics you want for your crack appearance. I also planned a super sekrit prize for all the party game participants, which is a look at the draft of a scene from the near-mythological next chapter. As [livejournal.com profile] fisher_queen was the only actual participant, she gets the exclusive peek (no sharing!--although you can gloat as you feel is warranted).

I have to admit, though, that I was rather sad about the overall lack of interest in the crackiversary festivities. (At least I didn't go with my original I-am-crazy-and-have-no-need-sleep idea to do a crackiversary crossword puzzle.) Live and learn.

Crackiversary Party Game Deadline

Another Crackiversary has come and gone, but the knights are still partying hard (much to Arthur's chagrin--you should see the mess they've made).

If you want to play the Crackiversary Party Game (and you know you do) there's still time, but your answers are due tomorrow, let's say at midnight EST. However, if anyone wants an extension until Saturday, I think I can convince Kay, who's grading the papers. Just let me know.

Also, although personally I think it would be more fun to try to answer the questions off the top of your head (Tor says he's the answer to every question, btw), I will point out at the following tags. Resurrection fic will take you to the chapters of the story along with any interludes, crackiversary fic, etc. The resurrection au tag will take you to just about everything I've ever said about teh crack, including memes and Q&As.

Happy Third Crackiversary!

It's been three years now since I first posted the first fic in what became the Resurrection monster series. I would never have believed at the time that I'd still be at it three years later (it was supposed to be a one off!). To celebrate the occasion we have:

Crackiversary fic. It's a lot longer than I had planned, but the knights have been getting restless.

A Crackiversary Party Game! (Go play. Or else. Tristan says so. And you don't want to make him mad, do you?)

A Crackiversary Play List.

So enjoy! Lancelot insists that you do--he's expecting gifts so, um . . . (run).

Crackiversary Party Game: I smoke more crack than you

Ever wanted a chance to make use of your vast knowledge of the Crackiverse? Well, here’s your opportunity. Answer the questions below in the comments and prove your bona fides as a crackhead.

Prizes? I did promise prizes didn’t I? Get 12 points and I’ll link you to a download of a majority of the songs on the Crackiversary Play List (about a third of them I only have as protected files, so those can’t be uploaded). Whoever gets the most questions right—what, bragging rights aren’t enough for you?—will get a walk on role in the fic. (Some of you suggested Lancelot as a prize, but, after legal consultation, unfortunately, I’m not insured for the liability issues that raises.)

This is open book, and everything ever written about teh crack is fair game (no looking at your neighbors' paper, though, comments are screened). Have your answers up by Thursday, January 29. Winners will be announced on Saturday, January 31.

Have fun!

ETA: The Crackiversary game is over, and congrats to [livejournal.com profile] fisher_queen for winning! The correct answers to the game appear below in the comments.

Third Crackiversary Play List

I don’t know why it took me three years to think of this, but what’s a party without music? Here are some of the songs I’ve been listening to over the last three years while I’ve been working on teh crack. Most of them have lyrics that have some connection for me to the fic itself, even if it might be an obscure one, but most are fairly obvious. (Some might even hold clues ;) ). One song per month. If you guys like this, we’ll do it again next year, because there are a lot more songs, and it’s pretty unlikely I’ll be done . . . .

(Songs aren't familar? Want to have a listen? Go play the Crackiversary Party Game.)
