While I do realize that The Daily Show is not exactly news (although perhaps a little more news-like than Fox News), I found it pathetically telling that when Jon Stewart asked his Monday night guest, soon-to-be-former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee (one of the last of the very nearly extinct breed of “moderate” Republicans) to name one thing Congress has done in the last five years that it could be proud of, the answer was silence. It was funny at first, but after about 30 seconds or so, when the man couldn’t come up with one damn thing, it was just really, really sad. (National pet a fish day? Ordering four new trees to be planted in some park somewhere? Anything? ). The senator was clearly at a loss—it wasn’t just a joke. Christ.

You can watch the interview here.

I saw that too. I was reading a headline on CNN - Bush: 'I will not be rushed' on Iraq strategy.

Really?
Argh!!!

He's not going to budge a centimeter. All this "taking the matter under consideration" is a charade.

Things are not any brighter here in Canada. For quite awhile the only thing newsworthy was the Tye Domi, Belinda Stronach, Peter McKay debacle. Domi's soon-to-be-ex was pointedly ignoring the press while her not-so-bright-soon-to-be-ex was seen around town with Belinda. Then Peter McKay (Stronach's definitely ex) made some asinine comment about Belinda being a dog. Then he denied it. Then he said yes, he said that, but, he was referring to his dog. And, this is news because....?

Then we moved on to picking on the newest leader of the Liberal Party. His mother was born and France. He was born in Quebec, but because of Parisian laws he has duel citizenship.... And this is news because....?

I guess the politicians think if they blow enough smoke we will miss the really big shit they are currently trying to pull off.

Yeah..... it is a sad state of affairs.

It's not just the politicians, either. Half the reason they get away with it is that the mainstream media is run by corporate conglomerates.

In Canada, the CBC is owned by the government, so guess what? Depending on who is power the media is fed the information to be broadcast. Pretty pathetic isn't?

It least it's straight forward that way, I suppose. @@

Please pardon the comment spam, I read "Words Unspoken" and was skimming for other fic when I ran across this. Sad indeed, but not surprising. I spent a small fortune (that I don't really have) before this last election contributing to the various political campaigns of people whom I really hope will do some good while in office. A fool's hope yes, but a fool's hope is better than none.

No need to ask for pardon--comments are loved. : )

I'm rather a pessimist myself, but if we don't start out by hoping for something better, we'll certainly never get it.
