For the one or two of you out there who have expressed interest in the clothes our heroes might parade around in in the crack AU (or for anyone else interested), a pseudo contest. Since it has been firmly established that I am little but Ashley’s puppet, dancing haplessly to her tune, I’ve started working on the next story, and I need someone to give me a suggestion on designer clothing. Give me the name of a designer who would fulfill the following criteria: ridiculously expensive (the more outrageous, the better); men’s clothing (in particular silk shirts--though fabric is not actually a big deal); would be considered trendy by a young British gentleman (or a knight formerly from the 5th century); and is known (or it would not be unheard of) for the clothing to be bright and multi-colored. If more than one of you ventures an opinion, do feel free to fight it out among yourselves, or I’ll just end up flipping a coin or something. ; )

Prize? Um. You can pick the name of an original character that’s supposed to appear in the next chapter if you want. Details to the winner on request.

Oh, and in case anyone is interested in my crazy flailing the actual plot, I’ve made a very small change to Trouble in the Making to adjust for my caffeine-induced delusions of what I think the plot might be. Huge bonus points to anyone who figures out what I changed.

Thanks to those of you reading the fic and to any of you who choose to play!

Unfortunately, menswear has not evolved to the extent of integrating a full color palette into a collection. At least, not with the more successful, high-end designers. Miguel Adrover and As Four (now As Three, I suppose, as Kai has quit yet again) come the closest to having done really funky designs, but they concentrate on womenswear primarily. Heatherette does some outrageous menswear with color, but they aren't as high end.

As to my pick for a young hip Brit's designer of choice, it's either John Varvatos, or Tom Ford (the former Gucci designer). Both of them have the brand aesthetic that I think you're looking for. BTW, Tom Ford is also the guest photographer for this year's Vanity Fair Hollywood issue, and even appears on the cover.

If you want outrageous, I can't believe I forgot Comme des Garcons (by the fabulous, slightly mad Rei Kawakubo). Also, Helmut Lang for casual nights out (leather pants, anyone).

You are awesome. I love the pictures I could find of Comme des Garcons. Hehehe. I may make use of some of the others at some later time, but for now this seems perfect. Do you want to name the character?--feel free to say no. I'm not that fond of coming up with names myself so the "prize" is slightly self serving. If you do, I can give you a bit of info on him.

She's brilliant, isn't she (Rei, I mean)? Yeah, sure, I'll think of something. Float me your character, and let me channel. I would be honored.

Unfortunately, he's not all that exciting. Older man, British, extremely wealthy background (but money made in the last three or four generations, so not really old money), but one who abandoned running the family interests to be an academic. I'm picturing him as less than a first tier scholar, at least in terms of reputation, so he's not an Oxford don or anything, but respectable enough to get invited to all the major conferences, etc. (although his position may have more to do with the fact that he can fund grants and chairs than any perceived merit). Personality-wise he's a bit of the typical professor-type, except perhaps a bit more off the deep end and more enthusiastic and credulous about his field (which is folklore and mythology, and you can I'm sure guess his focus).

Name him however you like--silly, referential or prosaic, whatever (but if it is referential, do tell me the reference, since I'm not likely to get t on my own : ) ). My only restriction is that his name cannot make direct reference to anyone in the Arthur myth or the movie. Indirect is probably fine.

Enjoy!

Leighton D'Aubigny. It was the first thing that came to mind this morning, and immediately at that. No reason, really. I just tend to go with my instincts. I'm sure the name culled itself out of the depths of the autodidact's syllabus (though I know that D'Aubigny is an old English name, despite having French roots).

I don't really know men's fashion, but I love the clothes in ads for Versace. Lots of color and designs on shirts and ties. Like a fuschia and tangerine shirt with black designs stamped on it. Worn under a shiny gun-metal gray two-button suit with wide lapels. Fun and little sassy.

Then there's Prada.

And I'm looking through a GQ magazine that I have and there's a Helmut Lang two-button suit. It's cut slim with a little stretch to the fabric allowing for a close fit without the seams puckering. Kinduva of a retro style reminiscent of James Coburn in "In Our Man Flint". Very cool looking. $1,570.

I'm on my way out the door to run errands. I'll look around some of the stores while I'm out and about. This'll be fun!

Later!

Hmm, me thinks you have a point with Versace. As they they say in England, it's a proper bit 'o flash, roi-ght..

Versace is great--I may use later. If you come up with anyone else you'd like to suggest for potential later use, please do. : )

Hey, I found this website that might help. It's out of New York and has a gallery of runway photos from shows by lots and lots of designers. You can pick the designer and then see the photos. You can click on the slideshow and/or click on individual photos to get a more detailed look. All the designers mentioned in the replies appear to be on the list.

These are men's fashions, but there's a whole set for women's fashions, too.

And the Tom Ford issue (March '06) of Vanity Fair is excellent! And, goodness, there is a *hot* Dolce and Gabbana ad in the latest GQ (with Heath Ledger on the cover). Of course, I don't get out much, so what I think is hot, may be more like lukewarm.

Very appropriate, since some of the actors in the King Arthur movie, on which this AU is based, have signed up to be models for them--as I was recently informed. : ) I may use this later. Thanks very much for the suggestion!

Hrm. Prada. Armani. Perhaps also Hermes - but that's somewhat understated in tone.

Dude, dance, puppet girl, dance! *evil laugh* :p

Good suggestions, which I will keep in mind. To loosely misquote Sir Percival Blackney, Baronet, high end fashion is not my forte. : )
