Title: Winter Where You Are
Challenge: For
ka100 challenge #18 "Winter"
Word Count: 100
Warnings: None, except spoilers for the end of the movie
When summer comes again to Britain, Arthur, newly crowned, cannot shake winter’s chill. Although he sweats in his armor, although the sun beats down upon him, still, he shivers.
He does dream sometimes of warmth—of snow pale skin, the touch of which is nevertheless fire. He wakes colder than before.
The last true heat he remembers is Lancelot’s pyre; the last true heat he felt was when he plunged his hands into those hot ashes. But no fire can warm him now. His summer has passed, and however long he lives, for him, the seasons will never turn again.

Date: 2005-12-28 10:32 pm (UTC)Don't feel bad...all I've been doing today is thinking about finishing Hedonism up tonight and totally not wanting to help customers. Fuck 'em. :p

Date: 2005-12-28 10:55 pm (UTC)And customers--well they should really just learn to help themselves, shouldn't they? (and aren't people just tired of shopping at this point? I'm tired and I don't even celebrate x-mas)

Date: 2005-12-28 10:38 pm (UTC)My favorite line:
"The last true heat he remembers is Lancelot’s pyre; the last true heat he felt was when he plunged his hands into those hot ashes."
Nice!
Side note: I don't know if it's just my end, but I found your story through my flist. I didn't see it posted in KA100. Missing link somewhere? Slow upload to the community?

Date: 2005-12-28 10:49 pm (UTC)Yes, you're right. It isn't up at the community. I will post it there later from home--for some reason it hasn't wanted to post properly from here at work. (yes, I'm slacking off today)

I wish I was that creative when I slack. Usually I'm dusting or doing some filing.

Date: 2005-12-29 05:16 am (UTC)You're a beautiful writer. I know I've said this over and over, but this is another sign of it.
And I agree that Arthur's 'summer' has passed. The seasons are often used as signs of age, and Arthur has now entered the autumn of his life when he has to shed so much of the past and start to harvest the fruits of his labor.
Good work.
