Um, sorry if it was unclear, but he's illiterate (at least in this fic)--he knows the story because he's heard it recited. I decided that having him know the story and also be able to read (or at least having him being able to read before he had to learn some in order to get by for soldier duties) would smack too much of mary sue-ism. And the idea of an oral culture is growing on me.
