Title: The Red Cloak
Author: amari
Word Count: 100
Author's notes: I found I had written this drabble a week or so ago and forgotten about it. Given that I'm stuck on figuring out Arthur, it seems appropriate to let it free and hope that I get over this.
There are black times when the agonizing drag of the chains that shackle the knights to Rome's whim leaves Lancelot almost unable to bear the very sight of Arthur. When hard-earned respect and even love are not enough to overcome the fact of Arthur's devotion to the empire that has yoked them to this endless nightmare of blood and death. At those times, Arthur's vaunted principles seem cruel self-indulgence and his speeches sound like parody. And listening to Arthur proclaim his convictions in stirring tones, Lancelot wonders what Arthur, who has never been anyone's slave, can truly know of freedom.
