Not all that much is known about Hypatia, but what little there is, is fascinating. If you're interested, some other women of learning from the ancient world: Theano of Crotona, who was Pythagoras's wife and supposedly started the first co-ed school with him; Asclepigenia of Athens who was a contemporary of Hypatia's; Diotima of Mantinea, who Plato cites as Socrates' mentor; and a number of others.
