The Romans’ wall stretches across the horizon like a scar, like an abomination, like a chain to bind the earth itself.
Lancelot rides straight at it. At the last, his horse shields, but for once he refuses to move with his mount. Momentum throws him into stone, and he lands at the wall’s base in a crumpled heap. Lying in its long shadow, he aches and hates.
The nudge of his horse’s muzzle rouses him, and the reproachful look in its eyes drags him up into the saddle. He rides back to the fort, lesson taught but not yet learned.
